Sorry, Not Sorry: Why Saying 'No' Is Your Superpower
No, I’m not going to care that I look like a tourist at my local airport. Instead, I’m going to take the picture of the cute Texas souvenirs and enjoy the window shopping.
I’m coming in hot today like a stubborn toddler who refuses to eat vegetables. This is a shortie post, but I think the idea of “no” will come in crystal clear. Here’s a tribute to the power of “no” and using it to our advantage.
Humans have grown to adapt and say “no” quite a bit more than saying “yes”. If asking a question to someone in a position of authority, there’s a greater likelihood of them saying “no” than “yes”. Ex: Mom, can I have candy? (probably a “no” as a first response). But what if the kid asked “Mom, is there any reason why I can’t have candy?” See how that response could drastically change?!
We can turn around that “no” and use it to our advantage. For example:
Is there any reason why I can’t sit and read for an hour to relax?
Is there any reason why I can’t take a walk (inside or outside)?
Is there any reason why I can’t have the other people in the house do chores too?
Is there any reason why I don’t need time to myself today?
You can even begin the sentence with no, then flip the script. For example:
No, I'm not going to make a long drawn out blog post …instead, I'll make it short and digestible.
No, I'm not going to take up a lot of your time reading this today... instead I'll give you tidbits that you can easily read all at once.
No, I'm not going to do all the laundry in one day... instead I'll value and prioritize rest and relaxation today.
No, I'm not going to just daydream about that trip I've wanted to go on for years... instead I'll take one small step of action for the trip by putting money in savings to buy the plane tickets.
No, I'm not going to get stressed by my kid’s meltdown about (fill in issue here) ... instead I'll take deep breaths and decide to walk away for a few minutes, or hug them while they need comfort.
So, no, I’m not going to make this post a big deal. But, yes, I think you get the idea…
Until next time, enjoy the journey!
